We are 2 working mums dedicated to breastfeeding. We were both oversuppliers - a bursting freezer was a regular occurrence during those days! We were shocked at the lack of affordable methods to preserve our breastmilk - breastmilk that we painstakingly stashed through days and nights of pumping and just couldn’t bear to toss.
Inspired by this, we decided to embark on a journey to bring this technology to every mum and make sure that everyone gets a chance to preserve nature’s Liquid Gold.
Freeze-drying (lyophilisation) is an effective way to preserve macronutrients, micronutrients and other unique bioactive components in mothers’ milk. It is the process in which a completely frozen sample is placed under a vacuum in order to remove liquid, thus allowing the ice to change from solid to vapour without passing through a liquid phase.
Stage One: Freezing
This stage involves the sample being rapidly frozen under specific atmospheric pressure, at a very low temperature. This allows for large crystals of water to form.
Larger ice crystals facilitate faster and more efficient lypholization because the water molecules are able to move faster during sublimation.
Stage Two: Primary Drying
This stage involves the evaporative cooling of the sample in a low pressure environment. This results in sublimation, where the water molecules change from solid to vapour without becoming liquid. In this stage, about 88% of water is removed.
Stage Three: Desorption Drying
This stage is also known as “secondary drying”. In this stage, additional heat is added to remove any remaining moisture. This prepares the sample for long term preservation.
